The prevalence of livestock diseases has also intensified and caused increased loss of livestock, decline in their productive and reproductive capacity, and reduced market values. For instance, more than 70% of the households in South Omo and Guji, and 56% in Borena indicated that livestock diseases have intensified in recent years as compared to the past. With extended droughts, the existing and newly emerged livestock diseases are causing more illness and livestock deaths.

CISO has thus planned innovative, socially sound and sustainable development strategies which change the livelihood potential of disadvantaged and resource poor communities. So, the following core activities have been planned and being executed through the  livelihood security program of CISO. This includes:

  • Conduct public work and food-for-work programs;
  • Promote business model via value chain development, entrepreneurship skills,self-help groups and cooperativeness
  • Introduce and promote drought tolerant and early maturing crops(e.g Amaranth) and  high yielding animal breeds
  • Train model farmers;
  • Strengthen use of Farmers’ Training Center and train model farmers;
  • Conduct joint agricultural research activities and disseminate innovative agricultural technologies
