Education Program
It was in the World Declaration on Education for All (1990) and the Dakar Framework for Action (2000) that quality of education was recognized as a prime condition for achieving “Education for All.” But, most schools in rural parts of Ethiopia fail to provide quality education because of low profile of teachers, low teacher-student ratio, shortage of class rooms and limited access to reading materials. Ethiopia’ education sector was characterized at all levels by extremely low overall participation rates; 30% at primary, 13% at secondary and less than 1% at tertiary levels. Its gross enrolment rate of 30% at primary was one of the lowest in the world and even less than half of the average for Sub-Saharan African countries. Girls’ participation rates were much lower than those of boys, especially in pastoralist areas.
CISO is currently working on the Girl Power Education Program which aims to increase access and improve the quality of education to girls. The main achievements of the program thus far include:
Reducing school drop out rate and enhancing school performance of girls through reading corners, remedial classes, awards for best performing girls, and supporting selected girls at gender related conferences
Promotion of girls education via media campaign, community festivals, establishment of Girls Education Advisory Club (GEAC), girls sport club, distribution of IEC/BCC materials, organizing inter-school activities such as academic consents and drama shows
Community mobilization and capacity building through PTA (Parent Teachers Association) and KETB (Kebele Education and Training Board) manual production, training, sensitization workshops and giving recognition to community members who break the vicious circle of harmful traditional practices
Strengthen sharing of best practices and lessons learned, on girls education, among schools via Inter-school Networking, provision of manuals and organizing forums, refreshment training for primary school teachers
Creating safe educational environment for girls through the construction of gender segregated latrines and washing facilities, establishing school playgrounds
Through your donations, we spread kindness and support to children and families.
